I had quit smoking by gradually reducing the number of cigarettes per day. For example, no more that a pack for the first week, no more than 15 for the second... And so on, until complete stop. This method worked very well for me, as I had a time to reajust both psychologically and physiologically. To occuppy my hands and mouth with something when they were begging for a cigarette, I took a thin strip of hard cheese and shewed it slowly. Also, increase my comsumption of chewing gum and used small hand toys just to hold something.
Some people say that it is easier for them stop abrutply, or "cold turkey". I had a very hard time with that. It is actually up to you which method to choose, whatever works. I am sure there are plenty of resources in the internet on this subject.
