Wendy,
I had a boil about a year ago and in the same place as you. Yes, it was stress related. In doing research on boils, I've found that the main reason for them was a depressed immune system.
My doctor told me that on the upper part of your rear end right at the tail bone (basically the top of your 'crack') there is a whole bunch of glands and it is the most common place that people get boils.
I had to get mine lanced because it wouldn't go away on its own. That presents a whole other set of issues with the healing. It has to be from the inside out (AKA packing) or else it just closes up and refills and comes back.
If this one won't go away on its own, I would suggest you see your doctor. I had mine tested for MRSA and it was positive. A boil is basically a staph infection in a pore. And MRSA is a nasty type of staph infection. Please get checked out on this because it won't go away on its own and you need a specialized type of antibiotic to get rid of it.
Anyway, you're not alone in this. Stress does all sorts of ugly things to our bodies.
