Hullo everyone, Brian here. Just a note to inform you all that my cousin Evie, batgirl on this forum, was admitted to hospital this morning. It's for a combination of physical and psychological concerns. She is scheduled for surgery on her stomach, and she is feeling rather down on herself as well. She will be there likely 2-3 weeks. She's not alone, as my mum and dad are going to be with her most of the time. I'll be around on and off, more off than on in the next while as I am leaving on a training mission this weekend. My dad, Jim on the forum, will be around, so if you want to ask anything about Evie you may PM him. Please be assured though she's being looked after, and I'm certain she'll be excited to be back on the forum once she's out of hospital.

Cheers, Brian

Scott, Evie is having her surgery in about 14 hours from now. Of course my wife and myself are anxious for it to go well. After that she will likely recover in hospital for another week or more. I am giving her everyone's regards, although now what she needs is rest more than anything. I thank you for asking however.

Evie's surgery this morning went very well, although it took a little longer than expected. We are just very relieved that it went well, and tired as we were up very early this morning to see her before she went in. She is recovering now and I will keep everyone updated.

Well. We just get settled to sleep, it being close to 5 am here, and there is a call from the hospital. Seems Evie had a very bad nightmare and fell out of bed. The nurse on duty threw a fit, yelled at her, made some remarks about her being crazy, and left her lying on the floor for over an hour. Another patient reported the incident to a doctor, the nurse was immediately suspended and we were called.

We are just sick about it. Want to remove her from the hospital immediately, although she's nowhere near ready for that. We have been assured that this was an "isolated incident", but I can't help be worried how they are treating her when we aren't around. Not to mention how this is going to impact her emotionally.

Well, just wanted to write that. No replies needed. Need to sleep, but it's difficult to relax wondering what's going on at that damn hospital.

OMG...... I do hope that Evie is alright. I can't believe that they would do something like that. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. In Vermont we have the Visiting Nurses Accociation and HOSPICE. They work with patients recovering at home. Good luck and hope she is ok.

That's awful Jim, blooming awful. I hope that the nurse was fired on the spot. That is gross negligence. I hope that Evie's ok.
Get some sleep Jim.
Take care

I see you still haven't slept eh? Rough night for everyone. I hope Evie is doing okay today? Or better at least?

I know that they said this was an isolated incident.. but I would push that if you have the energy. When I had my surgery I had some aweful moments with nurses.. it's common. However, whether this was an isolated incident or not.. she could have been seriously hurt, nevermind what this has done to her emotionally and mentally. Don't let it slide if you can spare the energy.

*wish I could come and advocate for you guys.. cause this really get's my goat.*

Jim,

Remind Evie that we all miss her and are thinking of her constantly.

Also I would seriosly push for the in home health care being provided by the hospital. You could remind them that it would be less exspensive than a suit. Thats about the only thing these people understand any more.

Jim,

We are all sending our prayers for Evie.

I don't know Canadian laws. So this may not help, but in the states, everything has to be put in writing for any complaint to be truely taken seriously. The one thing most places like hospitals, etc really hate is publicity of their wrongs. (like newspapers, TV, etc) So if any of you contact the news media with a story like that it may get the nurse fired and truely get things changed in the hospital.
Maybe the hospital would then pay for the home health care you want, Evie needs, and get her out of the hospital that no one trusts.

my 2 cents worth.

Take Care

D (wildcritter)

Thank you all for the concern and comments. I'm not sure about suing, that is not as common an occurance in Canada as in the US; laws are very different. In any event we are pushing for home care.

Jim.

Jim,

I'm so sorry to hear about how Evie was treated. Words (other than a few choice ones) escape me that someone trained in healthcare would let a post-op patient lay on the floor after screaming at them. That nurse should have been fired and brought up on charges. I hope you guys get the home nursing!

Jim
24-01-2007, 02:12 PM
Evie is coming home tomorrow morning, we got some home care for her, although it's private and we are paying for it ourselves. The nurse has been suspended, it remains to be seen whether she will be fired. Kathy is spending the night at the hospital, then I pick them both up in the morning.

I have 2 weeks of American Idol taped for Evie. She really likes American Idol, Canadian Idol, Pop Idol, and so on, hopefully that will cheer her a bit.

Jim.

Holy shit!! I just got caught up - That nurse better get fired! I'd take her to the courts for damages too! So glad Evie is getting home into familiar surroundings. I hope you make the hospital pay for the private nursing costs. Make sure you get the details of the patient who reported the incident.

Damn hospitals!!! Like she hasn't seen enough of them already.

Thanks for being there to take care of her Jim!

Thank you all again. Yes she's home now, came home this morning, and we have a home care nurse. She was on the forum briefly after supper, I set up the computer so she can type a bit sitting up in bed. I believe she wrote in her private section, not positive. However we're limiting her time online as she needs to rest. She's still quite ill obviously.

Thank you for providing all of these updates Jim. I did not have long to talk to Evie before this, but reading what she wrote before I joined has endeared her to me. Please tell her to take everything twice as easy as she would otherwise, and to rest whenever as she feels the slightest need.

Thanks Scott and mouse. I was resting completely for a couple of days, but now I'm getting to the stage where I am not well enough to be up all day, but I am well enough to be bored. I hate that. It's the time when I have to be most careful about not overdoing it, too!
