My family and I are leaving on our holiday early Thursday morning, and we are currently in a scramble to get packed and organized. So, in case I don't have another chance, I wanted to wish you all a wonderful holiday and a safe and happy new year. Take care, and we will chat with you all again after our return on the 5th of January.

Happy Christmas, or, as we say in Gaelic, Nollaig Shona Duit! And. Best wishes for a safe, prosperous New Year.

Jim.

Woo Gaelic, can't resist! ;)

Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Daoibh! (Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!)

Go mbeire muid beo ar an am seo arís. (Toast - May we be alive at this time next year!)

I think our holiday is going to be weird... Newfoundland Irish Christmas in the Carribean??? Very weird... But hoefully fun.

I know holidays aren't the best of times for everyone here, I remember that well from the 5 years I was away from my family, but I still wish everyone here a happy or at least restful time and take care.

Have a safe and wonderfully relaxing trip! As a fellow Irishman (or girl as the case may be), I loved the gaelic lessons as I know none of it. =)

Thanks, ya'all - Merry Christmas!
Grace

And a happy holiday season to you all.... please enjoy your holiday together and have a great Christmas and even better new year. I know one thing, by the sounds of it I will be in deep shit when we come over your way next year, as I pronounce it (New-Found-Land) which Evie said I could be beaten for. Apparently I must learn to call it (New-Fu-Land) or something like that pronunciation.... HELP! I don't mind stirring the pot anyway, which even when learnt to say correctly, I will still go down the shop and say it my way just to gauge the reaction.... a shit, I know I am.

Haha Anthony, I am not kidding, you should pronounce it our way... or else. This is from the Newfoundland tourism website:

Newfoundland is an island that was independent until 1949 when it joined confederation with Canada. Newfoundlanders pronounce Newfoundland to rhyme with 'understand,' placing emphasis on -LAND, not New or found-. It sounds something like "newfin-LAND." Mainlanders (those residing in mainland Canada) and tourists are noted for their pronunciation of Newfoundland as "new-FOUND-lund". This should be avoided however as it is considered offensive to Newfoundlanders.

Haha, that's funny about newfin-LAND. And I love the Gaelic!

A very Merry Christmas to you all and to you Kathy, Evie and Jim, all the VERY best for a wonderful and restful holiday. Soak up that sun and culture.

When I am overseas I like to just take a moment every now and then to just realise and think about where I am. Just picture the worls map and reall realise where you are.

Have a great time!

Oh dear Anthony, I believe Evie is telling you a bit of a fib. Yes, it is not appreciated to have Newfoundland mispronounced, people are insulted, however you will certainly not be beaten for it. Perhaps 30 years ago, however not these days. Tourism is now our main industry, and there would be no point to being violent with those who are our bread and butter!

The mis-pronunciation of Newfoundland does have very emotional origins however. When I was a young child, 50 years back, Newfoundland was extremely poor, and many Newfoundlanders had to leave their beloved island to find work. Many ended up working in factories and other manual labour in Toronto. The Torontonians were, to put it politely, rather snobbish, and not known for being kind to Newfoundlanders. There was much prejudice. Coincidentally, the Torontonians also mispronounced the name of the island. So when we hear the island mispronounced, we think of Toronto and how badly our older family members were treated there. It is actually far more of an insult to hear a Canadian mispronounce the name, as they should know better. Foreigners are treated with more leniency.

I wasn't fibbing Mum honest... Travis told me that, blame him! ;)

Foreigners are treated with more leniency.

Personally, based on Anthony's attitude below.... I would say be as harsh as necessary :stupid: and bring back the beatings

A I don't mind stirring the pot anyway, which even when learnt to say correctly, I will still go down the shop and say it my way just to gauge the reaction.... a shit, I know I am.

Wishing everyone an wonderful holiday!

I do hope you all had a marvelous holiday, or at the very least, a good rest. I am still officially on holidays until the 5th, however there has been a change of plans. Jim and Evie have already departed; I took them to the airport this morning. Travis and Krista are going to remain until mid January. Scott and his partner have gone to Brazil for a week and will reunite with Travis and Krista following their return. Everyone is off doing their own thing and although I am on holidays I am feeling a bit of empty house syndrome! Not certain what to do with myself, so I decided to visit the forum for a brief while today.
