View Full Version : The War on Snow
I think we, Americans, (or at least the American media), are a little too obsessed with using violent or "fighting" words to describe everyday situations/issues. Think about how many times you've heard one of the following:
the FIGHT against obesity
the WAR against heart disease
the BATTLE between the sexes
Well, last night I heard a new one...and I SWEAR, the news reporter was not meaning to be sarcastic or facetious. They were talking about the record snowfalls we've had in the Northeast this year, and described snow removal efforts as, and I quote, "the WAR on snow."
Umm...let me put on my kevlar vest and get ready for those darn flakes! LOL

I also live in the NEastern US in upstate NY. As I listen to the rain, sleet, freezing rain fall out the window and type this I have to laugh. I teach weather to my students as part of the curriculum. We, THEY try to predict "SNOW DAYS". I always hear them on wunderground.com looking up the weather maps and argueing, "no she said you have to have atleast 4 L's. Ha Ha
Last friday at school I put on the blackboard "Snow Day Tomorrow".
They slowly caught on - "Hey - tomorrows Saturday there isn't school"
My reply, "If I have to start up the snowblower it's a snow day to me."

I'm taking advantage of the snow we got today, and going to try and snowboard again. I hate cold weather and don't like driving in it. But I found a new hobby so this will get my mind off of the bad weather for awhile.

a few thermacite blocks should do the job, youll soon get rid of the snow and the concrete and...
but language is dangerous stuff, there seem to be crusades wars and fights against and such like in a lot of news stories, i think that the sensationalism of the press has got used to using these words without thinking about what they actually mean, news headline the war against( insert) the battle against (insert) all very bad use of language, there are a lot of studies in anthropology and such which i wont go into, but the use of language is reflective of subconcious mental attitudes towards things, the use of war battle crusade are all conflict terms, you are with us or against us type language, they also carry a different message to people not from the social of national group in which such terms have become commonplace, as for a war on snow, that is a good example of the bad use of language,

I am from Eastern Canada and we have beat the record of most snowfall in a season...I think it was from 1971 ! So much snow, the city doesn't know where to bring it !
One snowstorm after the other...it is not ending !! Actually this is how I remember winter :) ohhh did I mention I love winter and snow ? :)

I am sorry but this does not compute! People born and raised in Florida do not relate to snow. The only white stuff we know about is the sand on the beach.
That stuff pretty much stays where it is unless a hurricane happens to blow by, then the sand get the hell outa the way.

All we get here is approximately 10 months of rain and clouds.............then if we are lucky,a great summer.
Takes a special kind of person for the PNW, one who doesn't rust!

I get the rust concept. My mother had one of those old giant cadillacs fromm the late 70s/early 80s. I call them "land yachts". It was parked about 50 yards away from Tampa Bay in Florida, in a carport.
The mist of salt water from the bay "ATE" (rusted) the fins off the back of the dam car. We watched those fins slowly disappear. As the car got older parts would just simply drop off. I called it the "green beastie"
Alas, it went to the big parking lot in the sky. The rust monster ate it

Me vs. my snowman; round one ~ fight!
I try to hit him but my hand goes right through him! But now my hand is freezing cold, ohhh noooo its a losing battle I fear as I have to go inside to find some mittens. Fully equipped now I run back outside and go for the left twig arm. It snaps and a splinter lodges in my thumb!
Eh... I give up... justice will be served when the sun comes out tomorrow. >=]

I must say, I have never met anyone who has been assaulted, beaten up and embarrassed by a simple snowman. But the question is--Did anyone witness this or did you manage to keep your dignity?
PS how's the thumb?:thumbs-up
