This is unrelated to this forum, but I thought I'd try anyway.

My family dog is getting quite old... she'll be 13 this May. Lately it's like her digestive system is gong out of wack.

Most troublesome problem is that she's begun to piss on herself, it gets all over her back legs and she stinks up the house. I was giving her baths but it only helped for so long. After one of the baths I let her sleep at the foot of my bed, and I woke up early to the stench. She had pissed herself in her sleep and slept right through it.

I don't know what is causing this or how to fix it. It's difficult as I don't play with her anymore, don't let her in my bedroom, and can't stand to be within nose range of her which is only a few feet. I've tired of the frequent baths.

I'm completely clueless, anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

While I am a cat person, I can tell you of several things she may have. The dog is elderly so she may simply be incontinent. It may also be a bladder infection and the worst possibility is a bladder tumor, which at her age is very possible.

I've been doing a lot of reading on the elderly pet and they can also get dementia. That would also account for her problem.

She needs to see the vet. I wish I could help out more. Good luck

Thanks Herc, you're probably right about the vet. I'll try to get her in there. Hopefully it's the infection, which would be the outcome that's curable.

I know this is going to sound odd, but they actually make doggie diapers for just this problem.

I had the same problem with my 17 year old dog when I was in college and it's just something that happens to dogs in the last years. The vet will be able to help you by doing tests and determining if it's a bladder infection or just old age. Maybe some old towels for the doggie to sleep on will keep your bed dry. It must be bothering her to go around all day with wet legs and smelling like urine. She probably feels shame because she thinks she's a bad dog for messing in the house. She is not doing on purpose to make you angry. Love your doggie while she is here.

Thanks for your replies, I might have to look into those diapers.

She was taken into the vet today, she has a level 5 ear infection (apparently that's the most severe level of ear infection) and they are doing blood work on her. Also I am grateful that they bathed her and trimmed her.

Once you start the medication for the ear infection, it won't be long before she is feeling better. She'll be very grateful. She'll sleep a lot at first, but that is normal.

Snuggle up with her on the couch.

I know how precious a part of the family, our pets become.

Yes, the medication has helped and she is doing better. Still waiting on the blood work though. Put her in a kennel a few hours ago, as I'm leaving tomorrow. She likes it there and they have her meds. She'll be picked up on Thursday.

Upstream, Good to hear that your dog is temp. somewhere she likes and I imagine feeling a lot better with the medicine and grooming and all. Keep us posted on the bloodwork and let us know how she is doing please.

Our family has cats, however, my absolute favorite animals are dogs.

Hope

I too hope the baby is doing okay, poor thing. Did the blood work come back yet? If you must resort to the doggie diapers, you will have to wash down there often as they too can get a rash just like a child. You can use cornstarch to help with the excess moisture and try and change her after accidents. Both of you are in my thoughts.

I'm not sure, I've spent the past week and a half running around the country. My brother has been taking care of her since, I'll ask him and get back to everyone.

My brother says she's doing good. The blood work came back, she had an infection in the kidney or bladder or the like. She's on anti-biotics and will be back to health in no time.
