There is a news story on right now about a father in Austria who not only fathered 6 children with his own daughter, but kept her and 3 of those kids in a secret basement room for 2 decades. They were just found. His wife claims she never knew what was going on.

I was kept in my family's basement too, made to use a chamberpot instead of using the bathroom like my parents, and am a survivor or incest by both parents. My parents made me wear sexy clothes as a child. I am not going to watch the news for a week until that story is gone. I am getting very depressed, physically sick and having a really bad time right now.

Husband knows, but he does not know what to say or do; he just changes the subject. I am going to have to take something strong to put me to sleep to prevent nightmares. I am shaking and crying.

Why are people so cruel to each other? What did the daughter do all those years to survive? My T today asked me how I survived. I have no idea.

You are very strong to have survived. We all are.

What do you take for nightmares? I've been having them nearly every night for a month... made a doctor's appointment but it isn't for a few more weeks!

I'm sorry to hear this 2quilt. I hope you feel better and don't have any nightmares. Can you try some relaxation techniques or take a hot bath? Anything that will help you relax?

Sometimes when I see something that I think will cause a nightmare, what I do is let myself think about it, and even write it down or talk about it. The more you let these feelings out (as apposed to repressing them) the less likely you will have a bad dream about them.

I know it makes you sick to think about it, but if you repress it the only logical thing your mind can do is dream about it. So you have two choices, deal with it now while awake, or deal with it in the form of a nightmare.

Take care of yourself

2Quilt,
I also heard about this sick man. I cannot believe his wife knew nothing unless she was an invalid and didn't ever go downstairs. Satan the Devil is to blame for all this kind of sickness this world suffers. The bible says soon God will put an end to this. I can't wait! Humans do not deserve this. When, I get real upset, I act like I am kicking Adam and Eve in the butt for giving us this sentence of sin and imperfection. Turning to the bible is the only thing that I feel has saved me from going down the deep end of life.
Hang in their! You sound like a very caring person to let this type of treament upset you and due to what you endured yourself you have feelings for others. It is a good quality when you must have alot of anger built up with what your parents did to you..

2quilt, have you tried prazosin? my pshyc. prescribed it for me. she worked in a va for vietnam vets trying it out with the real cap. and placebos. ya know, the trial phase or something. She said that it helped very well with their nightmares (the real cap). it's still used today for nightmares. so far with me it works ok, I still have extremely bad nightmares, but sometimes their better. She did say I was on a low dose, so maybe a higher dose would work better.

I heard about that too, crazy some of the things that go on in this world/what people can do to another human being. Hope you're feeling better. Take Care.

I read about this and there was another article in the paper today saying that the family had been reunited....

Apparently the area where they were kept was well concealed and a code to get in was also needed. Said it was big enough to house a family and had sleeping, living, cooking quarters and also a bathroom (the paper said sanitation facilities).

The mom was told that the daughter ran away with a religious cult and the babies were left on the doorstep with at least one note saying she could not care for them. The paper said he chose the one's who stayed in the celler based on whether or not they were "crybabies". The kids in the celler ages 19 (in the hospital in critical condition - on dialisis) 18 and 5 had never seen sunshine until the day they were released.

Yes I have listened to this over here in the U.K, on the radio. It is hard to listen to that story! I am not sure what to say really. I am not shocked by the cruelty of humanity anymore. I am not cynical either just accepting that these things are happening right now as I type in different places all over the world.

I guess my thought is; have these children really been released or is their hell just about to really start?

I wish hope for them, much, much hope! Hope for all of us 2quilt, much hope!

2quilt:

I'm so sorry you are being re-exposed to your childhood trauma via the media. I have been triggered by media and tv shows and it is not fun. I think it is because we go back to our own experiences and compare the differences.

I've learned to turn off the tv very quickly and not read the papers when there is a situation close to home. Obviously there are still times things sneak by, and before you know it you are there.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS YOU SURVIVED!

Give it time it will pass but it's crap going through it. It is temporary. Each time I find it mellows out in shorter time.

This may give you an opportunity to journal about what you felt like when you were rescued or the abuse stopped for you. How did you feel when you knew it was over. Just like these girls are now experiencing. What were their immediate feelings when released? Write each of the girls a note (not to send), what would you say? That's what you would have said to yourself so many years ago.

Have compassion for yourself. This could give you some insight about you then and now.

Just a thought. My thoughts are with you. Hang in there.
