Still trying to figure this out + a rant of sorts

Posted 01-03-2008 at 07:01 PM by reallydown
OK...so I haven't quite mastered this blog thing yet but I shall not let that stand in my way...hahaha...If only I could take the same approach in other...Alas!

Now for the rant...I meant to make this a blog post but ended up posting it as a comment in the Phobbosopher section...

So here it goes...well, at least some of it.

Topic: Aliens...as in extraterrestrials...

This still seems like a bit of a taboo subject and people who suggest that alien beings exist and have visited us, and indeed continue to visit us, are often ridiculed and seen as...how to put htis delicately...NUTS! But...according to that, I happen to be a nut...The main argument is that it is impossible for aliens to come here because of the vast distances between planets, solar systems etc...

But this presupposes several things...a) that those beings, if they exist, must be at the same level of technological advancement as us...b) time is linear c) space cannot be folded d) failing the above those beings must be microbes...e) humans are the alpha and omega of life forms in the universe...Maybe some of this is oversimplified and I am certainly not a scientist but...it appears to me that some of these assumptions consist of nothing but arrogance and an unwillingness to challenge soem of our basic scientific assumptions...After all, did the scinetific establishment not think the Earth flat at some point...did people not get kille dfor suggesting that it's round or that it revolves around the sun and not the other way around?

I guess what I am saying is that scientists should be more open-minded than many are when it comes to this subject...Cou;ld these beings not possess technology far superior to our own? Perhaps they've been around a lot longer than we have and have figured out how to fold space or whatever...

Maybe I'll continue this later...but for now I'll leave it. I'd be very interested to see what people think about this...Maybe I am just a nut after all :)

I actually agree with you. I don't have an opinion on things I don't know about...and I don't know about extraterrestial's and stuff, have absolutely no knowledge or even reading around the area... so to me, I don't believe or disbelieve and will wait until a time when I have something that I can make a judgement on...

In terms of arrogance though... I absolutely agree! Seems to be a fundamental human trait (and flaw if you look at the state of the planet) to assume that us humans are so superior...

I agree with both of you 100%. There's no way to know for sure. And humans are quite arrogant. Who am I to deny another's truth. I wasn't there, I don't know! I wonder how many people have gotten PTSD from being abducted and can't get the proper help because no one believes them!

Just my 2 cents, Morgan
