Fake Cell Phone Calls

Came across an odd website yesterday:
http://www.popularitydialer.com/

The idea is you submit your phone number, and at a preselected time you receive a phone call with an automated message. The idea is that the fake phone call will make you seem more important to people within earshot.

Sad thing is, back in college I used to know a few people who would play these kinds of games. You know what I'm talking about... announcing who they're talking to quite loudly? I'll change the name in my example...

"Why hello JOHN SMITH! Oh wow, we haven't talked since last night! ...Why of course I'll go running with you this afternoon! OK John Smith, I'm excited too. Goodbye John Smith!"

I found it more annoying than impressive. After all, John Smith was a bit of a social butterfly within this club and everyone within earshot knew and hung out with John Smith. Or there were times when people would ask to see your phone... and then would proceed to scroll through your phone numbers to see who's numbers you had and who's you didn't... I guess this was to gage where you were socially within the club.

Of course then there are always people who use their phones for more strategic purposes. Found this on youtube:

Use your cell phone "to prevent unwanted advances! Obstruction is power, and your important phone call can stop them in their tracks!"

There was only one time in my life when I appreciated a fake phone call. This sweet girl used it to diffuse a conversation that had just gone awkward... then pretended to hang up and continued the conversation from where we left off before the awkward part. She was great.

Anyway, I guess there is one positive to come from this...

This mp3 is one of the possible automated messages you can receive from popularity dialer. I'm not recommending it to make you more 'popular'... but if they ever get the website running again it would be a nice phone call to get a few times a day. Make you feel just a little bit better during those difficult days at work...

Food for thought,

Pretty funny that youtube vid.... guess thats why I can't stand mobiles and even worse, those who reside upon them like its their life or something. If a person doesn't have something better to do with their time than spend it upon a phone IMHO, I usually have nothing to do with them myself. Cannot stand the mobile nonsense that goes on nowadays.... I think the opposite... lose the phone and get a life, not have a life through your phone. Go figure I guess....

Yeah no kidding. What drives me nuts is the rare occasion when I go to a store to buy one. They always try to sell me on the bells and whistles... "This phone has a web cam, email access, video games, an mp3 player, and receives television channels! Buy the new accessory and it doubles as a tooth brush!"

"Um... cool... but can it call people? Because that's what I want my cell phone to do."

These days I can't walk into a store and find a cheap and simple cell phone. I'll probably end up ordering a cheap motofone for my next one...

12.5 days of battery life. Can't beat that...
