Default All Tobacco Use Is Bad for the Heart

Researchers from McMaster University have a new study published in Lancet this week that finds all exposure to tobacco — smoking, chewing, or inhaling secondhand smoke — is bad for the heart, increasing the risk of heart attack by up to three times. The results are based on data from more than 27,000 people in 52 countries. Smokers had the highest risk, around a threefold increased risk of heart attack, but light smokers also had double the risk of nonsmokers. High levels of exposure to secondhand smoke, defined as 22 hours or more per week, increased the risk of heart attack by around 45 percent.
