Default Questions About EMDR

I'm sure this has been discussed a thousand time on here and I'm sorry for asking it again.

My therapist just told me he thinks I'd benfit from EMDR therapy. He doesn't do the therapy but he has someone in his office that does.

I've looked it up online and even looked at the therapists website that would be doing the treatment.

I'm not sure what to think. Part of me says if it will help....let's do it. But the other part of me thinks it's a waste of time. I find it hard to believe that following a therapists fingers back and forth is going to erase these thoughts and visions from my mind. I guess I'm just being pesimistic.

This was my regular therapists answer to me not wanting to take meds. He said if I don't want to take the meds prescribed to me than I ought to try EMDR.

Have you tried EMDR? Is it worth a shot? Would I be seeing her for EMDR but also continuing to see my regular therapist?

It's awfully expensive and I don't see anywhere on her website where she says insurance covers these sessions. UGH!!! More stress....money!!!!

Anyway I'd just like to get some insight from some of you that may have tried this. Did you like it? Did it work? Did you leave there after each session feeling more in control of your thoughts and feelings? If it was helpful....was it a permenant fix?

Sorry for all the questions gang. But I figure you guys are the real "experts" on this stuff!!!

Like bec pointed out read up in here using search. What would stand out the most is is your trauma a single thing? If only one trauma it may be of great benefit. Multiple you are running a big risk making PTSD worse (though it may help), and if you think it will erase memories or forget you are being majorly misinformed. It helps you concentrate and work through it. If multiples you can be so flooded you cause even more damage as it brings shit to the surface, you are exposed hard. Good you are asking from others. There are those recovering from EMDR here.
