| | Notices | Welcome to PTSD Forum. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a life threatening, debilitating disorder that can break down a sufferer’s body through anxiety and stress. Further it poses a significant suicide risk resulting from the brains neurological imbalance and chemical depression. Sufferers often live in denial, thus this community is aimed at helping PTSD sufferers help themselves through others experiences, guidance and education. We are here for the sufferer, spouse and families surrounding PTSD. Spouses and family are too often forgotten in this equation, and often they receive all the worst that PTSD has to offer. If you're involved in any way with PTSD, get registered and help yourself now. Non-active members will eventually be deleted. If you are not a sufferer, carer or someone within the mental health industry, and active, then there is little reason for you to be a member of this forum. Non-active members with zero posts are deleted periodically during the year. | |

| | Scatter Brained I'm making fun of myself by telling this story. It's a little long but might make you laugh a little. It happened a couple weeks ago. No politics! I promise!
I'm about ready to go to bed but before I do that I want to shake the dust out of a throw rug. I open the door of my apartment at the same time as my neighbor. I'm startled, I shriek, jump, and hit my head on a light fixture. I finish shaking out the rug, go upstairs to my apartment, and put a band aide on my wounded forehead. Stop shaking, you're safe I tell myself.
Next I'm in a panic because I can't find the shells for my shot gun (security blanket). What are you doing? You don't need that. It's not hunting season, you don't like hunting, and there's no targets in your apartment. You're safe! Just go to bed. Like I'm actually going to be able to sleep now - wrong!
I pace in my apartment for a while. This is ridiculous. I put my long underwear and winter apparel on and go for a walk. An hour later I'm really tired - should be able to get some sleep now. I sleep for about two hours but then I'm wide awake staring at the ceiling. I get up and lift weights and exercise for a couple hours. My alarm clock is buzzing.
I'm still in a hyper viligant state but it's time to go to work. At least I'm not tired - too much adrenaline. Once I get to work I remember that I need to make a wire transfer. I remember the account and routing numbers without looking at the paperwork but can't remember the password to log onto the computer system. It's the same password I've been using for 4 years. What's wrong with me? I take a walk around the building thinking it "will come to me". As I'm doing that I try to greet a coworker. I can't remember his name but I remember his wife's name and his dog's name. I go back to my desk and dig around until I find the piece of paper where I wrote down the password years ago. Whew!
It was a long one but I made it through the day at work. I stopped at the grocery store on the way home. I forgot my list but remembered all 10 items I intended to purchase. Good think I had cash because I couldn't remember the PIN number for my debit card. I was only in the store for 15 minutes but I forgot where I parked my car. I remembered the license number but didn't even know which direction to look. So there I was wandering around the parking lot like a lost puppy with my grocery bags in 4 degree (Farenheit) temperatures. I finally found it! I'm okay now. Just go home I tell myself, this will pass and tomorrow will be a better day.
I'm home now. I should go get my mail but first I ask myself "are you going to need a GPS so you don't get lost and freeze to death trying to find your way home from the mail box". |

I do exactly the same. I have learnt now -to always park my car in the same place when I go to the supermarket or to the shopping centre.
I am supposed to remember so many codes at work - one to get through the door, one to the store cupboard, one to the drug cupboard, another code for controlled drugs etc, etc- the list is endless. I think my colleagues get sick of reminding me of certain numbers/codes! Not to mention remembering everyone's name - it's a good job we have our name attached to our uniforms, or I may forget my own lol!
It's strange because I can 'automatically' enter codes, if I'm not 'thinking'; but if I literally 'try to remember', then my mind is a blank!
I think I have learnt that I can be a bit of a scatter brain. At least we can see the funny side of this. (I'm sorry that this episode lead to a sleepless night though - that is all too familiar)
Take care, Cherry |

| | Scatter brained It sounds funny but I know exsactly what you're talking about. I forget what I am looking for before I even get up to look for it. My daughter is great help to me, on the way to the kitchen to get her a drink I'll forget what I was doing and now I just say "Jess, what I am I doing ?" She is always ready with the right answer. Its really annoying sometimes though, and I hate it when I'm talking to someone who doesn't understand me and I forget what I was saying right in the middle of a sentence. Talk about embarassing. I also write myself notes to remember important things but then I loose the paper...oh well. have a good day/Chrissy |

You have no idea how glad I am to find someone else who looses their lists. Car parking---now that is another issue. Me too same spot every time. Plus it is in the lower 40 as they say. Need the exercise BUT I can also see the dam thing This scatter brain symdrome is a funny one you must admit.
