I'm watching ABC News right now, and they just had a brief segment about a research article that will be out tomorrow in (I think they said) the Journal of American Medicine. Anyway, they said that the article talks about a PTSD gene and how it could be (in part) genetic.

I read something about that on the NIH website a few days ago. They found that people with this gene seem to develop PTSD, while others without it do not.

Interesting, but there are so many factors. The gene contributes to a predisposition to develop it.

I just read a short article (which I will post in the news section) that suggested that PTSD is 30%-40% genetic in origin. That is, it results from both a traumatic experience as well as a genetic predisposition.


Personally, the information comes as a relief, as I pile so much blame on myself for being "weak" and developing this. It's nonsense, but it's what goes through my head nonetheless.

That's very interesting... I frequently wonder how much of myself is genetic predisposition and how much is from my environment. The older I get the more I seem to be a mixture of all my relatives.

I just saw this thread and can shed some light on this, I think.

It has been decided that all but "1" sibling of the orginal 7 children born to my grandparent inherited this genetic chemical inbalance. Call it genetic or chemical, it is still inherited. Then depending on what triggers the individual they go into their own conditions.

My grandfather quite life at 50 and never worked another day in his life. To make ends meet, my grama took in boarders. Grampa had what mom remembers as his "spells".

He went out to the family cottage at the lake and stayed there about 4 years. Seeing no one and doing nothing. He was not capable at that point. Grama went out once a week for dirty clothes, to deliver food, etc.

I have several cousins and "1" uncle who have received electric shock therapy. Most all of the cousins have one form or another of this crap. While all my mom's siblings have since passed away, through discussions with therapists, it has been decided that all the kids had it.

There is no question in my mind that the genetic connection exists. I am the product of that connection

kers, I felt the exact same way as you -- what a relief!! Because I am always blaming myself for this, even though heaven knows I don't choose it and I don't want it!!

My Dad has been through PTSD as a result of an event at work. Incidentally, he was also physically abused as a child.

Now that I have developed PTSD as the result of an event at work... and I already had depression + anxiety/panic issues for 15+ years prior to the PTSD (and our family doctors all concurred independently that the depression did appear to be hereditary in our case) ... and I also inherited migraines from both of my parents ... Well for me, this study simply confirms what I already strongly suspected.

It's genetic, it's not my fault, and it's the way God made me.

Now since God don't make no junk, I need to figure out what's the silver lining in my raincloud. LOL
