Oh wow, I lost track of this thread. Thank you for your replies.

I've only been outside of the US twice, once to an Island in the Caribean and once when I walked accross the border into Mexico. I wanted to travel abroad in college, but couldn't afford it. My friends went to places like Spain and Australia and came back with great stories.

I never got to go like they did, but I still want to travel and have those experiences. It's not that I'm running away from something so much as it's "I'm still young and the clock is ticking..."

well depends on where you want to go, despite the aforementioned opinion that we are all mad and blowing each other up and stuff most of europes easy to get around and you can get by with american english as long as you remember pants means underwear to the rest of the world, one thing to think on though is you may get a bit of flak over iraq but dont let that put you off travelling, irelands a nice place to visit, or you could go the other way hop out to the west coast and head to hawaii, then if your feeling brave could head north to midway to look at the birds or could head to japan then down through new zealand to australia, the worlds open for travel.

I've travelled widely. I only felt unsafe once because of a crowded environment and noone who spoke the language. The world is so vast with so many great experiences to have. If you use your head and respect local customs you should have no problems. If someone wants to share their opinions about 'America or Americans' listen, show respect for their opinions whether you agree or not, but it will tend to let the steam out of them. I have seen some real obnoxious travelling Americans and am sorry to say they have been used to assume all Americans are similar.
