i went to a cpa meeting last month and saw the same psychiatrist that i had when i was in hospital last year. he then had labelled me with 're-current depression' but i thought this was a bit strange seems as my understanding of re-current means more than once, and for me it's all just one that had lasted a year and included ptsd.
i couldn't believe my ears when he said that while in hospital i didn't show any signs of ptsd and that he was surprized to see it in my notes, in a tone of voice like i was just making it up. he thought he could just question me and rule it out, which he tried.
(the reason i was in hospital was because i was suicidal due to the fact the the man in the incidents sentancing was due and if he got off, the fear of him coming after me made me make plans to end it all.) just because he missed it, (how is beyond me) he said it couldn't possible be so. Luckily my therapist was there and chipped it that i definatly had ptsd and that it was present before i went into hospital. therapist 1 psychatrist 0. (my therapist works for the traumatic stress service so he knows what he's talking about). i hate the way he made my feel, having to justify my ptsd, fighting for the label that encompases all my issues, just because he was wrong, and me wishing i didn't have it too. what a wanker!

Sucks when their egos get in the way of healing huh? Agreed, wanker.

Well darkskies, here is another agreement for you. Many doctors are wankers, totally agreed. Why? Because they think they are always right... like how could they be wrong, their the doctor, where the patient. How could a patient know more than a doctor? How did a doctor know what they know? Reading. How do patients often know more than a doctor? They read more liberally across a wide variety of aspects relating to a topic.

Many doctors are literally blind to their own professions, because they get their degree, then forget about constand education, constant learning, instead they just bog down and "think" they know everything about everything, instead of actually learning everything they can about a topic. Sure, time consuming, but hey... their the one's that chose to be a doctor... why is it we end up having to know more than them?

Some are very good though, and do all these things and more. They make it their business to constantly learn, get as much information from all sides about a topic, see as many inputs as possible, and make informed decisions for themselves. If only more of these existed than the current state of affairs.

it looks like you have been let down, frustrated by a few doctors yourself. you have spotted their ego weakness and have responded, maybe out of necessity, to read up and research for yourself, because the knowledge and informed information hasn't come from a doctor but by your own research and need to know options.
i agree some doctors are great, they keep up to date, and make the time to read the revelant research, however, they are human and being so, do make mistakes and can't possibly know everything on every topic, thats where specialism comes in and the person who develops a sympom/condition becomes the specialist, as they try to understand the condition themselves and pool information from muliple places, so they can then make informed decisions. now the key here would be for the new specalist to re-educate the doctor, to broaden their knowledge, but sadly only the true professional would put their ego aside and learn from the common patient. i believe it is called shared information, i have seen this work in paediatrics, but haven't come across it in mental health yet. i suppose it comes down to one thing, you have to make the effort to help yourself, because you can't rely on anyone else to do it for you

Totally agree darkskies... and I truly wished so many within the medical fields would put their ego aside and listen. I love specialists, because they don't bullshit about knowing lots about everything, instead they know lots about a little, and little about lots, where GP's really only know little about lots, though pretend otherwise, the same as shrinks. Shrinks know bugger all specifically about every illness, only what they read and have come into contact with patients, though that is limited to the number of patients and their ability to learn, instead of think they know everything.

Ego's.... I think you hit it on the head. Doctors have them... and its a shame they aren't willing to learn more from those with more practical knowledge, not theoretical.

It's the God-Complex...that's who they think they are. Wankers all.
