Default 9/11 Hero Stamp Aid - Psychological Sufferers Get Zero

Some $10.5 million was raised through the sale of the special "9/11 Heroes" postage stamp to aid injured World Trade Center emergency workers and the families of their fallen comrades - but not for responders suffering posttraumatic stress disorder.

The federal Emergency Management Agency has deemed that only responders with physical injuries, not the "psychologically disabled," are eligible for the benefits.

"It's unfair," said traumatized EMS Lt. Anthony Vanaria, 40, who was assigned to scour vehicles towed from Ground Zero for remains of the dead. "I'm stuck paying the bills."

FEMA has reportedly approved 1,215 applications, for benefits from sales of the 45-cent stamps. It has rejected 180 and deemed 530 incomplete.

Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-Queens), who helped draft the stamp law, blasted FEMA, saying, "This whole process has been a disaster."
