Let me tell you all about a very, very special little girl.
Her name is Shelby and she is 9 and suffers from Cerebal Palsy.
Now, I met Shelby last August when we went on holiday to Kim's friend Becky who lives on the Island of Angelsay, which is off the North West coast of Wales.
Shelby has long blonde hair and is absolutely gorgeous. But she has a lot of problems walking, she has to where special boots, but most of the time she is in a wheel chair. Every night Shelby suffers from spasms in her legs and she has to be given physiotherapy by her mum and dad on her legs. In the morning she comes down, looking absolutely shattered, but she still manages to smile and say goodmorning. She knows that one day she will not be able to walk at all. And that gets her down, but she is a fighter and a tough little cookie. I fell in love with her and so has my wife, my 2 boys look on her as a sister and love her to bits, they are very protective towards her.
She attends hospital on a regular basis, when we were down she went to see a specialist and he suggested severing her spine to delay the inevitable. But her parents said no, they would not make such a decision like that. But this month she is seeing a specialist who might be able to at least try and give her a good quality of life, fingers crossed and some good vibes from you all please.
Last October she had spasms during the night and stopped breathing, her dad is an ex combat medic and knew what to do. She was rushed to hospital and we feared the worst. But she pulled through. During our time with her she insisted on playing with the boys like a normal kid, she had her boots on and had a great time. But it was to much for her and she became ill.
In the evenings I would take her a walk around the village in her chair and this was our time together, she loved my dog Sparkie as well and wanted to keep him. When she asked if she could call me Uncle Scott, I said of course you can my wee darling, it is the greatest honour that I have ever had, and my wife loves being called Auntie by her as well.
When we left to go back to Scotland, I was actually crying buckets and so was Kim.
My problems are nothing to what this little girl has to put up with, I've been a soldier and been in combat. But the bravery of this little girl puts me to shame. And my fellow soldiers in my old regiment feel the same.
At the end of last year it was announced that Shelby had been made Carnival Princess for a year. So our little princess is now a real princess and that has really boosted her confidence.
