Default What Are We Afraid Off?

There are several things which are not related to my trauma experience, but I am afraid of them anyways.
First (and most of all), afraid to get an ilness which would cause me physical pain or disability.
Afraid of water, manely cloudy water, because you never know what's hiding inside. I sometimes have scary dreams about lake with dark cloudy water, where I see dead bodies on the bottom.
Afraid of plains. I am a former skydiver, but still scared to take a flight... Probably, because if the plain crashes, everyone will die painfully, and because you will not know that something is wrong to the last second.
Afraid of spiders. If i see one, scream for help, so someone can come and kill the disgusting creature.
Afraid of pain. I'm not afraid to die, since this is how every living thing will end up, but absolutely horrified of pain.

This is a big one for me after watching my father and sister deal with unbelieveable amounts of pain due to the diseases that took their lives. I'm working on it...slowly...but working on it.

My family has told me I have a particular 'spider scream'. Of course, the fact that the spiders I scream about are wolf spiders that can be as big across as a saucer may have something to do with it!!!!

Marlene, wolf spidres - so they exist?
While I was visiting my sister in law in Nicaragua, I noticed a tarantula sitting in the bathroom.
I screamed, and informed Martha (my sisiter in law) immediately. Bur her husband was away, and she is afraid of spiders, too... So she took a baseball bat, and I took a large stick, and we together marched to fight the beast. It made a lot of noise, knockeng, hitting, falling down and enourmous screaming. We finally made it, but i thing the neighboures were thinking that someone is killing that Russian "chelita" in Martha's house :loopy:

Well I'm kind of embarrassed to say this, but I have a phobia of kangaroos. I've had it for as long as I can remember. When I was really little I used to cry if I saw one on TV, even Kanga and Roo from Winnie the Pooh I was afraid of. Right now there's this purple kangaroo (a puppet, not a real one) on a TV commercial all the time, and I have to look away or leave the room when the commercial is on. There are some at the zoo near here apparently, and my family has been trying to get me to go, but I am sooo totally afraid. I don't want to be anywhere near those creepy things. It's such a weird fear, anytime I mention it people just laugh. I almost wonder if I've been reincarnated, and in a previous life a kangaroo kicked me in the head or something. Because it makes no sense...

My other fears are all just related to my trauma pretty much.

I'm terrified of bugs. Deathly afraid. Like wetting my pants afraid, especially if they touch me.

Also not overly fond of frogs, but am getting better (having a frog the size of a dinner plate sitting on the kitchen window does that) I'm fine just so long as they are outside and away from me.

I bought a toy called a "Bug Vacuum" to help me deal with my bug fear, since I also refuse to kill them. I can lean at them from far away, suck them into a little container, and then release them into my yard (or across the street)! Phew.

I am afraid of flying and traveling on water. And although my trauma had nothing to do with intruders, I think my fear of someone breaking into the house is PTSD-related (sense of safety?).

I would love to see/handle a frog that size. What kind of frogs are they?

I am afraid of Spiders too. However, I could never have been as brave as you Linda. I would have left the house to the tarantula and stayed elsewhere. I could not have done battle with it. OMG, makes me creep to think about it.

I am also afraid of flying in airplanes. Had a bad experience on a plane and promised God that if he would let the plane land, I would never fly again. That was over 20 years ago, kept my promise.

I am afraid of exiting my car and heading into the house when I used to work until late at night. I was vulnerable for that minute from car to house and no one would hear me if I was attacked.

I think the simple or common phobias really stick out in PTSD. Like tarantulas. I used to as a kid go catch the wild ones on my grandmother's property. I was a kid looking for a way to earn cash. Sold them in the paper for 1/2 of what pet stores sold for. But one day poof I was afraid. My big hang up is "naked" spiders. They drop down from the Texas tress at night and build their webs. Daylight comes they go back up. Gave my self goose bumps just then.

Funnel webs I hate. I had one in my boot and felt a tickle on my toe. I almost killed my daughter as she kept using my boots and would throw them down, not stand them up. I freaked pretty hard. So spider fears very normal, why do you think so many horror flicks about them?

Drowning is my major major hang up. I have for so long just knew when I die it will be from that and even though I lived on the coast I refused to go in the water as I became an adult. And hell, you see one of those days when jelly fish get washed up and the beach is coated in them you rethink hitting the ocean.

But my silly fear. Happy Easter... Rabbits. I am scared to death of them. Hubs raised them and I have had to have them held for photos... I pulled a roofer off my roof to hold them for me to do it. If I had to feed I would scream. My ex would have to come over to reach in the cages and do it for me if hubs forgot to feed.

And last but not least I am scared of people in public. I cannot get in their heads so I assume they have ill intentions, I am working still on that one. Not the end of the world if I do not get over bunnies.

I think it is normal to have phobias, just with PTSD we are prone to intrusive thoughts and blow it out of the water.
