A Reason To Live: Fighting Suicidal Thoughts We have all struggled with suicidal thoughts. I find that the best way to fight them off and fight through them is to have a plan of how to do just that before hand.
The plan I use is a "Reason to Live" list. I have a list of all the reasons that I want to live and need to live.
My list includes:
A) my son. I need to be here for my son. I need to protect him, nurture him, love him and support him. I couldn't do that if I was dead.
B) I have a future. I know that right now it doesn't feel like it, but I'm working hard to get better and have a chance to live with managed symptoms. I won't have that chance if I'm dead.
C) my dog. Who would take care of my dog if I'm not here? How mean of me. She would really miss me. I should go and hug my dog.
D) Killing myself could give my family and friends PTSD. I would not want to be responsible for giving someone else the very thing I struggle with.
C) A good cup of Timmy's coffee. I couldn't' have another cup if I'm dead now could I? Maybe I should go and get a cup and enjoy it.
There.. that's my list.. why not try to make your own and when your feeling overwhelmed with suicidal thoughts.. not only read and reread it to yourself.. but follow your own suggestions!
