| | Notices | Welcome to PTSD Forum. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a life threatening, debilitating disorder that can break down a sufferer’s body through anxiety and stress. Further it poses a significant suicide risk resulting from the brains neurological imbalance and chemical depression. Sufferers often live in denial, thus this community is aimed at helping PTSD sufferers help themselves through others experiences, guidance and education. We are here for the sufferer, spouse and families surrounding PTSD. Spouses and family are too often forgotten in this equation, and often they receive all the worst that PTSD has to offer. If you're involved in any way with PTSD, get registered and help yourself now. Non-active members will eventually be deleted. If you are not a sufferer, carer or someone within the mental health industry, and active, then there is little reason for you to be a member of this forum. Non-active members with zero posts are deleted periodically during the year. | | |

| | Hi Geneva,
You are now talking to the queen of reformed smokers...LOL!!!!!! I quit cold turkey 5 yrs ago after smoking for 41 yrs. Murder was on my mind every second of everyday for about 3 months.......I was a BITCH!!!!!
Do whatever you need to stop if you really want to. There are plenty of things to help you do it. It's hard, and it sucks, but it can be done.
Remember.....The urge to smoke passes after about 5 minutes, so getting through that 5 minutes is hard, but it will pass. That urge may hit 50 times a day, but it will diminish after time.
I hope that you can do this...If not, just try again.....Keep trying till you finally make it.
Good luck!!! |

| | Yep, done.... power of the mind really. Choices, all yours to make. You will either beat the cravings until they no longer exist so strong, or you will give in to them. Either way, choices..... |

| | Hi EmoxxKid,
I had quit smoking by gradually reducing the number of cigarettes per day. For example, no more that a pack for the first week, no more than 15 for the second... And so on, until complete stop. This method worked very well for me, as I had a time to reajust both psychologically and physiologically. To occuppy my hands and mouth with something when they were begging for a cigarette, I took a thin strip of hard cheese and shewed it slowly. Also, increase my comsumption of chewing gum and used small hand toys just to hold something.
Some people say that it is easier for them stop abrutply, or "cold turkey". I had a very hard time with that. It is actually up to you which method to choose, whatever works. I am sure there are plenty of resources in the internet on this subject.
Good luck! |

| | Hi Geneva,
Found this last night, orig. posted by Anthony, it seems to me it may be helpful and appropriate here for an added tip, for use, while you Live as a non-smoker.
Here goes: "Let it go, Let it out, Let it all unravel, Let it free and it can be a path on which to travel." -anthony
Here's a very simple concept too, one in which I've enjoyed, and have put to use in some areas of my life, and since it was first pointed out to me: Half of Life is, IF ! ......... L / if / e
just one ex of thought:
... If, I reaffirm and keep with my decision daily to live free from smoke, and therefore less likely to achieve emphysema, lung cancer, heart attack and stroke while in the process of my healing—then I may accomplish what I set out to—To Live!
Anyhow, Geneva
Take Care, Good work & ...((Hugs))

| | OK Kid,
Listen to your elders on this and know that we have been there, done that and even have the T-shirt.
It takes 3 days for your body to purge the addiction to nicotine. The rest of the process is the actualy habit of reaching for a cig when you do certain things. For me it was when the phone rang and when I was in the car driving.
I quit in an unususal way. I realized that I did not smoke in bed, so I went out and rented a bunch of movies, hooked the VCR up to the TV in my bedroom and stayed in bed from Friday afternoon untill Monday morning. I watched movies, at ice cream, napped or what ever I wanted for 3 days. IT WORKED. By Monday the cravings were gone and I have been smoke free for 4 years with only 1 craving since and then it was a feeling of boy could I ever enjoy a smoke_____not boy do I want a smoke.
To this day I do not want to smoke AND the smell of it actually makes me sick!
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. I smoked for 40 years. I was up to 2 1/2 packs a day. If an ole lady like me can quit I know YOU can.

| | ??Smoking?? Well kid, how is the quest to be smoke free going. Was hoping to hear some good news from you.
Please tell us you have been doing well. If not, well I have 1 little tidbit of advise.
Next time you try, DO NOT TELL ANYONE until you have actually quit. Telling people you are going to quit puts to much self imposed pressure on you.
So keep us posted. I know how hard this is GRAMA HERC |

| | Hi Hercules,
Honestly, I had actually foud it more effective to imform everyone that I am going to quit smoking. Whe I did so, I felt like having responsibilities before other people, and also could not neglect their expectation. However, things work differently for everyone. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
