Default I Went Out and Sung Karaoke

I went out last night. That was an accomplishment in and of itself! I also sang two songs, even though I had anxiety! It was hard cause I couldn't breathe very well but I sang both songs all the way through.

Also, a friend of the family was there and she told me to "get over it" (my mom told her I have PTSD). Then she started talking about my military rape to a total stranger. I managed to get through that conversation and still managed my anxiety. I didn't run away I stayed for my second song then came home and took my medication.

I don't go out much so this was major stuff for me. I think I did pretty well all things considered.

Take care all, Morgan

Default Congrats, Morgan!

Morgan -- I've very new (two days) to this forum...I saw your post and couldn't help but smile. I've karaoked myself and it's been hilariously fun each time! Congrats on your courage for getting up on a stage and singing your heart out

What songs did you sing?

Re: the "get over it" comment...I find that always comes from someone who doesn't understand...either because they simply lack information and need to learn about what's real...or because they don't want to understand. I'm sorry you had to hear that.

There have been many times when I've heard that kind of comment from others...and times when out of sheer frustration I've said it to myself. But this is not something we "get over," is it...I see it more as getting through...one healing step at a time.

Again...congrats! All the best to you -- Roo

Granted if she understood she may not have done it, but perhaps we're coming a little too close to making excuses for someone's bad behavior? Even if she doesn't understand, at the very least it is quite rude and presumptuous. Just my opinion, feel free to disagree vehemently as I'd like your feedback on this.

Roo,

I sang Levon by Elton John and Sweet Home Alabama by Lynnard Skynard (I don't know how to spell it right).

Upstream,
I do think it was rude of her. In fact my response to her was "it doesn't work that way." And she repeated herself that I should "get over it." I decided then that defending myself was useless and would only cause me more anxiety. It felt icky, but sometimes you gotta pick your fights and do what's best for you in the moment. I just told myself she doesn't understand and it's not worth the effort to try and make her understand.

Apparently, today she asked my mom if I was mad at her, so she seems to know she did something wrong. That's something at least.

Oh, there's something I want to add to my success story. I did all of that sober! I was tempted but I didn't drink anything but soda. That too is a big deal for me.

Thanx everyone for your words of encouragement.

Take care, Morgan

Default Understanding or not...

Morgan -- great tunes! They are two of my favourites.

Upstream: I'm in complete agreement that the "get over it" statement was inappropriate. Another way of seeing a lack of understanding is that it is ignorance...either the ignorance of being unlearned about something, or a chosen ignorance -- a not wanting to know. I've experienced the chosen ignorance from some of my immediate relatives -- one insists that I'm simply crazy and lazy and he leaves it at that. I've chosen not to engage with him because he doesn't want to learn, and he seems to have closed his mind to anything other than his own opinions.

With my own ignorance...I have learned to approach my own lack of knowing with curiousity and respect. I always ask questions, if the other person is open to conversation...and I love to learn.

I hope this clarifies where I'm coming from

Roo

Wow good stuff!!

Also well done for getting through the insensitive 'get over it' comment and then the conversation someone else had with another about YOUR life! That sort of thing makes my blood boil!
